Victoria
One
of the smallest capitals in the world
Victoria is the
only town found in Seychelles. Renamed by British Queen in
1841, it remains the center of business and commerce of Mahe
and Seychelles islands. With a population of 20,000 people,
the town overlooked a wonderful habour Port Victoria, which
in recent years has greatly expand due to reclamations projects.
The town moves seawards and is finding hard to resist against
development.

| The
clock tower, a miniature reproduction of London famous Big
Ben, represents the central part of the town and has been
part of Victoria since 1903 when it became a British Colony.
Today it is an historical monument for Seychelles.

| You
are more likely to be impressed by Victoria's old style architecture,
a mixture of colonial and creole style it is pure seychellois.
Unfortunately many of these old residences have been demolished.

| Formely
called sir Selwyn Selwyn Clarke Market, Victoria's renovated
open market or bazar sells everything from local fruits and
vegetables, fresh fish, spices and a variety of souvenirs.
The best day is Saturday when the market is crowded with seychellois,
you can also hear the lively patois of the seychellois-colourful
and happy people to share their islands secrets for, like
the islands themselves, they remain unspoilt by the modern
world. |
